30-Second Short Film

Bizarre, Surreal, Phantastic! is a film festival which takes place in the Castro Theatre, San Francisco, featuring two great surrealist directors, Federico Fellini and David Lynch. The film festival brings audiences in Fellini and Lynch’s worlds through their unique and absurd lenses, and provides us a chance to ponder our plain and stiff reality.

The entire film festive program and its visual elements including logo, posters, banners, collateral products and a 30-second short film were created, designed, executed by me. Yes, it is a simulative project that I did in college. However, undoubtedly, it can exist in the real world.

Patterns, the Punch Line
Pattern is another basic element in this festival campaign. Being used in many collaterals, the pattern has given the festival a clearly recognizable visual language. The “bubbles” inside the pattern are designed to be hard to observe, echoing back to the purpose that creates surprising moments to the audiences.

30 Second Spot
I created a 30-second short film which adds diversity to the system. With the carefully design and execution, the short film doesn’t repeatedly present the same elements but still conveys the consistent visual language of the program. By introducing slide projector, the still images are given a dynamic feeling, which activates the short film and the whole system.

Logo Design
The logo for this film festival is a combination mark containing a logo mark and variable word marks which are used in different scenarios. The logo mark is composed of two eye symbols; one is hollowed and the other is solid, meaning reality and unreality in the two directors’ films. I adapted Mrs Eaves which is an alternation of Baskerville. Beside, I designed a unique double-r ligature, connecting the theme of the festival.

Posters and Banners
I utilized patterns both in poster and street banner. Moreover, I distorted archival images which represent the rigid and boring world, and juxtaposed them with the pattern. The title containing ligatures which becomes the centerpiece is place in the posters and banners. In addition, necessary information is included in the posters and banners. The font used in informational texts is Mr Eaves XL.
